Phil Jackson's 2-Year Contract Option Reportedly Picked Up by Knicks

The New York Knicks and team president Phil Jackson reportedly picked up their mutual option for the final two years of his contract.

According to ESPN.com's Ian Begley and Ramona Shelburne, a source indicated the decision was made "a while ago," which means Jackson stands to remain in his current position through the 2018-19 campaign.

Per Begley and Shelburne, Knicks owner James Dolan said during a Feb. 10 interview on ESPN New York 98.7 FM's The Michael Kay Show that he planned to honor Jackson's five-year deal "all the way to the end."

The Knicks have struggled during Jackson's tenure, as they are just 80-166, and recently completed a 2016-17 campaign that saw them finish 31-51.

He made splashy moves last offseason by signing big man Joakim Noah and acquiring point guard Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls, but New York finished with one less win than it did in 2015-16.

Jackson also made headlines for seemingly slighting Carmelo Anthony in February with a tweet in response to an article by Bleacher Report's Kevin Ding.

The 71-year-old is an 11-time NBA champion as a head coach with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, and won two NBA titles as a player with the Knicks.

That hasn't translated to success in his current role, as New York hasn't reached the playoffs since 2012-13.
