DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers have enjoyed their first home stand of the 2017 season, winning five of six games and eyeing a sweep of the Minnesota Twins.
The Tigers have been carried through eight games by their starting pitchers, who have combined to hold opposing hitters to a .206 average over 46 innings. They've allowed 14 earned runs, issued 17 walks and struck out 38 batters.
But the top of the order has also made major contributions. Ian Kinsler is reaching base at a .455 clip and already has two home runs. Nicholas Castellanos has five extra-base hits and six runs scored. Castellanos is in the lineup on Thursday, but Kinsler will get the day off.

  1. Andrew Romine, 2B
  2. Nicholas Castellanos, 3B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. Justin Upton, LF
  6. Tyler Collins, RF
  7. James McCann, C

Jordan Zimmermann will start on the mound for the Tigers after holding the Red Sox to four hits and one run over six innings in his first start.

Zimmermann was Pitcher of the Month last April, when he allowed just two earned runs and 28 hits over 33 innings. The Tigers hope the 30-year-old can mimic that hot start this season and carry it into the summer.
After Thursday's series finale with the Twins, the Tigers will head to Cleveland for their first matchup of the season with the defending American League champions.
